PRE-READING ACTIVITY- Students will be placed in groups of 3. They will conduct a google/yahoo/ search of early 1900's advertisements. They can compare current advertisements that they see to the advertisements of the early 1900's. Each group will select one advertisement to share with the entire class to why they like it. Each ad will be saved to a USB, and then displayed on the projection screen in front of the class.

This will be a smooth transition into the Group Reading Activity:

ACROSTIC POEM FOR MARKETING

(TEACHER READ ALOUD)

One of the first forms of poetry many children learn to write involves spelling out the subject vertically on the page and using each letter to start a new line. The result is known as an acrostic poem, and can range from a very basic description of the subject to an extremely intricate long-form ode or epigram. An acrostic poem does not necessarily have to rhyme or follow any particular poetic form, but it should describe or allude to the subject formed by the vertical opening letters.

(PAIR ACTIVITY)
ACROSTIC POEMS WERE USED IN ADVERTISING/MARKETING IN THE EARLY 1900’s

Every lady in the land
Now has a Polish at her hand,
And thinks it better than a bar,
More quickly used, much better far.
Easy, clean, bright of shine,
Lovely, she says,
In saving time.
None was ever seen like
ENAMELINE.

From reading the ACROSTIC POEM, what kind of product do you think ENAMELINE is? Remember think Early 1900’s (Each pair will share their answer with the classroom discussion)
