Poetry Lesson Pre-reading Activity: Hailstones and Halibut Bones: Adventures in Color.
I will begin the lesson by reading the poem: What is Yellow?
Yellow is the color of the sun.
The feeling of fun
The yolk of an egg
A duck’s bill
A canary bird
And a daffodil.
I will explain that we will be writing our own color poem using our senses. Students will create a word web using their choice of color to brainstorm ideas for what their color can be.
Model:
To model this I will use the word Sunflower. As a class we will create a word web to brainstorm ideas for what a sunflower can be. Ex. Yellow, puffy, brown, big, mammoth, bright, sun, golden, tall, petals. I will model for them how I will use these words to write my poem.
Sunflowers are bright and full of might.
They shine whether it is day or night.
Sunflowers are tall and yellow
They make me feel mellow
Sunflowers are golden and fun
They shine like the sun
Differentiation:
For lower level learners students may complete a word web and create a collage of pictures to describe they words they have chosen.
For HOTS they can add the collage to their completed poem and create a cover for their poem.
Share:
Students will publish and present their work to the class.
